Football king: Old Collegian All White Stefan Marinovic

Stefan Marinovic (Selwyn, 2009-13) is one of our best Old Collegian footballers. Currently signed to German club SpVgg Unterhaching, Marinovic is also the number one goalkeeper for the All Whites and has been playing for them in the FIFA Confederations Cup this week. Alas, it was not to be for the plucky New Zealand team who finished up with a 2-1 loss against Mexico on Wednesday but the team, who are ranked 95th compared to Mexico at no. 17, showed they are capable of giving the top teams a run for their money. Stefan took some time out before the games to talk to us about aspects of his life at King's and as a pro footballer. How did King’s College help you to develop your football career? Kings provided me with the platform to be able train regularly on campus, as well as the flexibility to leave boarding school to attend trainings outside of school What was, for you, the best part about being at King’s? The camaraderie. As a boarder the chance to spend the whole week with your mates and to be able share so many experiences together built friendships that will last a lifetime. Do you have any advice for other young footballers aiming for an international career? I would say, don't aim to be a professional too early. It will put unnecessary pressure on yourself. You need a lot of luck to break into the professional ranks so always have a plan B ready. In saying that there is no substitute for hard work no matter how talented you are. How does it feel to play for the All Whites? As a proud New Zealander playing for my country is the greatest honor and privilege. I always give my best and I will never take it for granted. How much time do you spend overseas each year? I live overseas and spend a couple of weeks a year at home with family or with the All Whites in camp. What are your plans for the future? To further my career in football and continue with my Bachelor's degree. |
